There are too many nice places to eat and drink in York to limit ourselves to ten.  Here are some of our favourites:

Restaurants

The Blue Bicycle, Fossgate: widely recommended as the best restaurant in York
(by previous guests amongst others, but universally regarded as overpriced)
Harville’s, Fossgate: prides itself on steaks and oyster bar although also
surprisingly good vegetarian. Civilised, grown up, slightly ’hip’
  with excellent service
• Café Verdue, Petergate: excellent Italian in quiet central York oasis
El Piano, Grape Lane: first rate vegetarian and vegan tapas in comfortable,
  quirky surroundings
Caesar’s at Silvano’s, Cumberland Street: family friendly pizza plus, perfect
  for parties
Toto’s, Fawcett St: less than five mins walk, traditional family Italian,
  good food and child friendly

Cafes

Betty’s, Parliament St: Traditional English Tea, with a little Swiss thrown in
Little Betty’s, Stonegate: ditto
Melton’s Two, Walmgate: convenient and high quality tapas and more
serious meals; baby brother of much praised but untested Melton’s
  on Scarcroft Road
The City Screen café, Coney St: sandwiches, salads and coffee in unlikely,
  hip surroundings
Spurriergate Centre, Coney St: baby friendly lunchtime meals in former church
La Place Verte, underneath Skedergate Bridg

Takeaways

• Chinese: Jade Garden, Tower Street
• Indian: Mirchiz, Fishergate (excellent value but can be greasy)
• Pizza: Toto’s (see above; but only if not too busy)

Pubs

The King Arms, King’s Staith: Sam Smith’s by the river
The Maltings, Lendal Bridge: real ales
The Seahorse Hotel, Fawcett Street: the best and most friendly of the many
local pubs within five minutes walk
York Arms, High Petergate: very cheap Sam Smith’s directly opposite
  Minister (gay friendly)

Outside York

Bay Horse, Burythorpe (between York and Malton), highly recommended
  by our visitors
Chequers Inn, Bilton-in-Ainsty (near Weatherby)
Triton Inn, Sledmere (also a guest recommendation)
Fleece Inn, Bishop Wilton

Others

Alligator: wholefood deli and grocers 50 yards south along Fishergate.
The York Beer Shop, Sandringham St: cheeses, wines and Tim Taylors
on tap two streets south of William’s Court.
• Thomas of York, Market St, Coney St and Outlet Centre etc: the original
  York pasties
